Self-control separates us from our ancestral ancestors and from the rest of the animal kingdom, thanks to our large prefrontal cortex. It is the ability to subject our impulses in order to achieve longer-term goals. Instead of responding to immediate impulses, we can plan, evaluate alternative actions and often avoid doing things that we may later regret.
The ability to exercise self-control is usually called willpower. It is what allows us to direct our attention and underlies all kinds of achievements. There is significant debate in science about whether willpower is a finite resource or not. Studies show that exercising willpower requires a great deal of mental energy, especially from glucose reserves, the brain’s preferred fuel, which creates ego depletion. This is one of the reasons why we are more willing to reach for that chocolate chip cookie when we feel stressed than when we feel on top of the world.
